Clea releases new single 'Sugar': "True change is crucial otherwise we can literally kiss it all goodbye"
Clea today returns with her emotive new single ‘Sugar’, accompanied by a captivating music video. The beguiling indiepop track, which incorporates elements of shoegaze and 1980s dreampop, is the follow up to her comeback single ‘Soft Blow To The Head’ earlier this year and was inspired by the hopelessness Clea felt as bushfires raged across Australia in late 2019 and early 2020. “I was overcome with emotion and felt the strongest desire to cower and crawl in the corner,” Clea says. “It is the nature of humans turning a blind eye to a situation to save oneself of hurt, but in this instance there was truly no way of hiding. It saddens me deeply that it takes for the country to burn and our chests to fill with smoke to truly start to take seriously the issue of climate change and the great stress humans place on this incredible earth. The world is in great pain and the systems in place have failed us, true change is crucial otherwise we can literally kiss it all goodbye.”
The music video was filmed on a property in Queensland’s Scenic Rim region over three days and due to coronavirus isolation regulations was pulled together by just Clea and her two collaborators, Jack Birtles and Alistar Richardson. In a number of beautifully cinematic moments, Clea is seen roaming the countryside, submerged in a lake and standing in a giant bubble. “We concentrated on the natural world and based the clip around the four elements; wind, fire, water and earth,” Clea explains. "The bubble represents our disconnect from this earth and how heavily we rely on its resources, without giving anything back. Within the clip I am the resister, the fighter and the change.”
Never wanting to repeat herself and constantly challenging her creativity, ‘Sugar’ marks the next bold step in Clea’s musical journey, with a second album on the cards later this year.
