Lilly Carron releases new EP 'And The Clouds Came Undone'

Aotearoa/New Zealand singer-songwriter Lilly Carron has been releasing music since she finished high school in 2019, and her delicious, moving and definitely relatable music, now with over six million global streams, brings traditional pop melodies and structures into an uncluttered, chilled indie foundation.
Carron has recently released her second EP And The Clouds Came Undone. Its six tracks were created as her early twenties came to a close and reflect a need to better understand, and also to take ownership of, self.
“These songs were tools I needed to better understand and explore the relationship I have with myself,” Carron says. “Aware that my actions affect my life and that I’m in control of what I do and how I do it.”
The album opens with the smooth, summery vibes of ‘Apricot Sun’, which instantly brings joy with its sweet melodies and ‘da-da-da’ recurring lyrics in the chorus. Fifth single ‘Keeping Our Bodies Warm’ is as beguiling as ever, with synths merging with electric guitars to create a pop-rock-indie crossover gem.
‘Ease’ showcases Carron’s versatility, with a gorgeous soul-R&B sound, while ‘Wild For Change’ is a brooding, country-esque ballad that grows in intensity as the song progresses.
‘Hands’ is arguably the strongest track on the EP. An emotive, heartfelt song that is powerful in its tenderness, it is Carron’s love letter to the people in her life who have supported her, particularly during darker moments. Against an almost ethereal guitar-synth background, Carron sings of the despair of feeling lost and alone, with the ‘hands’ of her loved ones saving her: ”The way you look at me / As though I'm someone worth keeping / I wanna hold you like you hold me.”
The EP ends with the new single ‘Call Me Over’. An upbeat, almost dance-pop track that again brilliantly mashes indie-guitar with traditional pop sounds, it explores the desire to feel confident in yourself but not always winning the fight: “Wonder where hope's gone / Maybe I lost her…Fate unfolding, all knowing, all destiny / The ideas that hold me when I feel I'm losing.”
With And The Clouds Came Undone Carron has created a compelling EP which embodies the confident assured artist she has developed into since her first release five years ago. It is perhaps a cliche, but the six tracks on the EP have possibly everything you want from your music. Crossing over genres from pop to R&B to rock, it will consistently surprise and intrigue you and once the last note has played you will want to start over again.
