PREMIERE: Shirin Kalyani releases video for debut single 'Naissance'

Sydney based singer-songwriter Shirin Kalyani released her debut single ‘Naissance’ last week and today the music video premieres exclusively on Women In Pop ahead of its general release.

Self-written and produced, the song is a mixture of alt-rock and dream pop with lyrics examining the discovery of the complex intertwining between life and death as well as an ode to her adolescence. “With everything in turmoil, ‘Naissance’ is my survival anthem, expressing a deep longing and optimism for new beginnings,” Kalyani says.

The video was directed by Orla Doyle and is interspersed with black and white footage of Kalyani with her band and colour footage of her on a sand dune. “Orla and I initially had the concept of creating two worlds - a black and white “real” world and a dreamy “spiritual” world to represent the themes of the song, and the two musical genres of alt rock and dream pop, which merge at the end of the clip,” Kalyani says. “We definitely still used this concept in the storyline, but we also found the b-roll footage, filmed on Rachel’s (cinematographer & friend) video camera worked so nicely in the clip that it ended up featuring much more heavily than we were expecting. It was kind of lovely how this fit in with the main theme - that these little moments in life are what makes it, even if we have unanswered questions lingering over us about the great unknown.”

An earthy, warm and spiritual song ‘Naissance’ is a debut track that shows Kalyani has what it takes to create moving and intriguing pop music. Take a look at the video below exclusively on Women In Pop before its general release.
