Australian rising star Yorke today drops her first music of 2025 with the release of her new single ‘i wanna hate you’.
Written by Yorke with Josef Page and Saint Raymond on her first writing trip to London, ‘i wanna hate you’ sees Yorke’s exploration of electronic pop continue and features lowkey verses that tantalisingly build into a glorious, beat heavy. synth filled chorus.
The song looks at the breakdown of relationship, but in this case it is a platonic one and focuses on a friendship that has grown apart but in a way that has caused bitterness and confusion: ‘That's cool you said forever then you closed the chapter / That’s what you do best / So add me to the list of your so called disasters.’
“I'd started to have a bit of a grudge and hold the other person accountable, just because they weren't growing in the same direction as me,” Yorke says. “It's not anyone's fault, just the reality of growing up, but I was having a really hard time adjusting to losing the version of them that I could relate to.”
Also out today is the music video for ‘i wanna hate you’. Directed by Kyle Caulfield (G Flip, Peach PRC, Royel Otis) it is a continuation of the storyline from Yorke’s previous single ‘love on the run’ which featured two versions of Yorke - one good, one bad - caught up in a mysterious crime that sees ‘good’ Yorke framed by ‘bad’ Yorke. This time, we see the story from ‘bad’ Yorke’s perspective.
”This video leans into this camp/fun intertwining story where we get to watch Yorke in this surreal supervillain landscape,” Caulfield says. “It was a way for us to explore the themes and concepts behind the music and have Yorke play two characters that define the 'duality of woman'.”
This release comes off the back of Yorke’s recent Young In Love tour across regional Australian supporting Kita Alexander and continues the exciting new era in Yorke’s music career that begun with ‘love on the run’ last October, her first new music in two years. ‘i wanna hate you’ is proof she is creating some of the best music of her career right now and 2025 is shaping up to be a year of very special things from Yorke.
‘i wanna hate you’ is out now via Island Records Australia. You can buy and stream here.
