PREMIERE: Chelsea Reed drops video for latest single 'Loop'

Published: 30 September 2024

Australian singer-songwriter Chelsea Reed has recently released her new single ‘Loop’, her third release since restarting her solo career late last year.

Written by Reed and produced by regular collaborator Dave Jenkins Jr. (Vera Blue, Daniel Johns), the song is a shimmering, slinky pop song that has elements of jazz and was inspired by 1960s French pop. Lyrically the song talks of the after effects of a one night stand, and the perils of overthinking: ‘Got you playing on a loop’ she sings.

Today, the video for ‘Loop’ premieres exclusively on Women In Pop below. Directed by Rick Clifford and filmed in various locations around Melbourne, the video cuts between Reed performing and intimate moments with her love interest.

“I have been a long-time admirer of Rick Clifford’s work, and earlier this year, I was planning a trip to Melbourne, so I thought I would get in touch and see if he would be interested in working on a music video, and lucky me, he said yes!,” Reed says. “We had a really fun couple of days shooting at various locations around Melbourne, including a studio in Brunswick and some location shots at Footscray markets. My friend Lachlan Dunn, who has recently moved to Melbourne from Newcastle, stars as the “love interest” (isn’t he just the cutest?) and features some incredible outfits from local designers sourced by Mia Romero. Rick and I had many similar influences, like David Lynch and Wong Kar-wai. The toy plane is a direct reference to the Wong Kar-wai film Chungking Express. Whenever I am thinking of ideas for visuals for a song, I tend to see specific images and colours, and working with Rick felt like we were speaking the same language.”

After launching her career in 2017 with her self-titled debut album, Reed took a sideways step in 2022 and released music as part of the duo The Tryouts. Last year she rebooted her solo career with the pop-rock song ‘Dominic’. Reed’s music is a beguiling combination of the familiar and the new - there are always elements of sounds and feelings from earlier eras of music, but Reed’s brilliance is in ensuring the songs don’t sink into retro and remain fresh and contemporary. With Reed’s debut EP set for release next year, get set for more of her beautiful music in the coming months.
